A Home for Mr. and Mrs. Kimura
Residential
Project Size: 2,000 Sq.ft. | Project Length: 9 Weeks
Design Brief
The goal of the project is to design a 2,000 square foot single-residence home in Austin, Texas for the clients Mr. and Mrs. Kimura that will consider the desire to age in place by implementing measures that ensure safety, accessibility, and comfort. It will also have the opportunity to add further safety precautions for a wheelchair or walker in the future. Wherever possible universal design will be incorporated into the house. The design will also take into consideration their preferences and interests such as a reading area and a garden.
Client Profile: Mr. Kimura is 69 years old and Mrs. Kimura is 68 years old, they have been married for 45 years and they are both Japanese. Theyhave two adult children (both are married) and 3 grandchildren (2 girls and 1 boy) ranging from 8 to 13 years old. They require an indoor dining room for up to 10 as they frequently invite family over for dinner. They also require additional sleeping accommodations for guests as their children and grandchildren visit for a week (or more) at least twice a year. The clients would like interior spaces that have large windows and plenty of natural light. They would like to have a reading area as well as a garden where Mrs. Kimura can create fresh arrangements to display in the house. They also have requested traditional Japanese furniture (low tables and floor seating). Since Mr. and Mrs. Kimura are looking to age in this home additional measures will be taken to ensure that this is a universally accessible house is safe and functional as they grow older. Furthermore, measures will be taken to ensure this is a visitable house for those who are able bodied and those with a disability.
